Overview

Varanasi (Benares, Kashi) is the oldest living city in the world and is regarded as the spiritual capital of India. The city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges sacred waters and perform funeral rites. It is one of the most sacred sites in India because it is believed to have been the home of Lord Shiva.

The city is home to several temples which were erected at different times throughout the history of Varanasi by various kings, saints, monasteries, guilds and communities. With intimate rituals of life and death being parallelly performed on the Ghats, you’ll find it exhilarating to explore the religious geography of this city.

Varanasi represents the colourful and fascinating India of your dreams. Walk through the busy alleyways, experience an authentic religious ceremony, and watch the sunrise from a boat for an unforgettable experience.

Music

Music, drama and entertainment are all synonymous with Varanasi. The city has long been famous for its music, both vocal and instrumental and has its own dance traditions. Varanasi has a very rich stock of folk music and drama (esp. Ramlila).

Benares Gharana is famous in the art of tabla playing. Maestros like Samta Prasad, Kishan Maharaj and others come from Varanasi only. You can witness the music of the city at International Music Centre Ashram on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

Textiles

Silk weaving is a manufacturing industry in Varanasi. Varanasi is known throughout India for its production of very fine silk. Banarasi sarees are famous for their brocade (zari) work in gold or silver around the borders. Influenced by Mughal designs like floral motifs, these sarees are popular all over the world for their craftsmanship.
