Overview

Mumbai is the city of aspirations, power, wealth, glamour and nightlife along with stretches of shimmering beaches, caves, magnificent architecture, religious sites and a mouth-watering cuisine. Termed as ‘The city that never sleeps’, it is one of the busiest cities in India.

The city soaks everything into its fabric, making it its very own. From upcoming actors struggling to make it big on the silver screen; from Bollywood superstars to big industrialists to tribes of fisherman and slum dwellers, Mumbai is a city that proudly boasts of stories from different walks of human survival.

Mumbai city constitutes of seven islands which were previously home of fishing communities. Till 1343 the city was earlier under the rule of many Hindu rulers and then it came under Gujarat Sultanate and eventually under the rule of Portuguese in 1534.

In 1996, the city was renamed from Bombay to Mumbai. The name Mumbai came after the Hindu Goddess Mumbadevi.

 

Cuisine

Mumbaikars are very passionate about their local cuisines. The metropolis is famous for its street-fare such as Vada Pav, Chakli, Chivda, Modak, Batata Rassa, Dabeli, Pani Puri, Dahi Puri, Sev Puri and Bhel Puri. Apart from the local street food, South Indian food tweaked to suit the Maharashtrian palate, Maharashtrian food, Mughlai, Malvani, Punjabi, European and even South East Asian cuisines have caught on as popular fares in this lively city.
